Week #9 10/14-10/20

Thank you to all who came out to the Bobcat XC Festival at COCC on Saturday. Everyone represented well and had a good time racing on a tough course! I had a lot of compliments from parents and members of the other teams about our athletes and XC fans out on the course. Way to represent MVXC!

We are getting to that point of the season where we begin to lower our overall volume. Workouts get shorter and faster, our recovery runs get shorter and we start to sharpen things up for championship season. It is important to continue to stay on top of our recovery routines and take care of our bodies even when we may feel like training is getting easier and energy levels are up from where they have been. Let’s keep our focus and keep working hard all the way to the District Championships!

We have another busy week with Central Oregon Relays on Wednesday and Warner Pacific on Saturday.

Athletes will be released at 1:30 pm and will head to Pine Nursery for the Relays. Costumes are highly encouraged! Will there be a Parent team this year??? 😉

Week #8 10/7-10/13

We had a great showing at the Oxford Classic on Friday. We had some PRs on a slow course, along with great team performances across the board! Both the Girls and Boys JV Squads earned a 3rd place team Trophy to bring home some hardware! Both varsity teams placed well in their races, with the Girls placing 6th and the boys placing 8th in a very competitive team race. We are starting to see the hard work pay off, especially now that everyone is starting to steer clear of sickness. We still have some work to put in and some racing to do in the weeks ahead. Remember that everything we do is focused on being at our best on the day of the district meet. Let’s be sure to stay focused and take advantage of every practice to get better. Let’s keep rollin!

Thank you to everyone who came out to help out at Bigfoot! We had a good turnout and you all represented Mtn View XC well. Good job to those that ran the 10k. We had athletes and parents out there running (definitely had the best team representation!)

Bobcat XC Festival @COCC-10/12

This will be an untimed low key meet against Bend and Summit on the District course from last year. After the races Summit will be providing some treats for the teams and everyone can hangout and mingle. Parking will be on College way or in the lot beyond the Library. Everything else is permit only. We will not have a bus for this meet. Please plan on getting to the meet on your own. Let’s plan on being at COCC at 9am. Below is the meet schedule for Saturday.

XC week #7: 9/30-10/6

What a great weekend of XC! We had a ton of season bests and PRs. Both races seemed to be tough courses, with the Madras course having a huge hill and tricky terrain and Nike Portland being very muddy. We still had great performances and strong efforts (even with most of the team recovering from the plague). Check the list of PRs from the weekend below!

Now we have a quick turn around to the Oxford Classic here in Bend at Drake Park. This is an awesome meet and it is a great opportunity to get a lot loud Cougar XC fans out on the course! Invite friends and family to come out and cheer on Mountain View. Hopefully the Cougar mascot will make another appearance this year! Please read below for other important happenings this week.

  • Sophomore Olivia Carpenter raced to a PR of 20:41 at Nike Portland.
  • Sophomore Chase Schermer ran a PR of 16:58 and earned a top 50 medal at Nike Portland.
  • Senior Nate Robbins had another PR performance running 18:38 at Nike Portland.
  • Sophomore Iris Welsh continued her PR streak running 21:54 at Nike Portland.
  • Freshman Sarah Nelson PRd at Nike Portland, running 22:14.

Bigfoot 10k volunteering: October, 6th

This year for the Bigfoot 10k we will be volunteering to help out on the course as usual, but we also have a cool option for athletes to run the race as a training run if they want. Athletes can use the discount code: XCATHLETE to get $30 off registration! This run is only to be used as a training run, not a competition! Our volunteer assignment will be at the finish area at River Bend Park. Be there at 8:30 am!

XC Week #5: 9/16-9/22

We finally got our 1st race under us at the Northwest Classic in Eugene. We put in some hard efforts against the best competition in the State! It’s tough to open up the season with such large and competitive fields, but everyone handled it well and worked hard in the heat. We ended up having 15 PRs on the day, along with some awesome individual and team performances! Below are some notable performances and fun facts from the meet!

  • Freshman Kyle Swenson ran his 5k debut in 17:58!
  • Senior Nate Robbins Crushed his PR from last season by almost 2 minutes, running 18:48.
  • Sophomore Iris Welsh ran a big PR to open up the season in 23:20.
  • Sophomore Walter Marquez broke 20 minutes in his first XC race! He ran 19:39
  • Freshman Weston Shaffer just missed breaking 20 minutes (20:01) in his 5k debut.
  • The Varsity boys had a team spread of 50 seconds between the top 5.
  • The Varsity girls had a spread of 80 seconds for the top 5.

Very exciting to see PRs, awesome debuts for freshman and great team performances between JV and Varsity! It’s still early in the season and we are just starting to scratch the surface in terms of our fitness and speed, versus where it will be in October and November. This week of practice will be mixed with some hard training and some fun as well. So, be ready to put some work in this week since we don’t have a competition on Saturday.

XC Week #4: 9/9-9/15

Well, our first meet didn’t go as planned, but we definitely made the best of it! Thank you all for being patient with the cancellation. All we can do in those situations is make the trip worth it and I’d say that dance party was well worth it! Mountain View cross country definitely provided the entertainment for all. Love it!!

Now we move onto our next meet, the Northwest Classic in Eugene. This meet is a biggie and is held at Lane Community College, which happens to be where the State XC meet is held. It should be a fun meet with great competition! Since we didn’t get to race on Saturday, this will be a great opportunity to open the season with some fast times and really compete against the best competition in the State. There are multiple divisions so it is likely the team will be split up between 3 different races. We will start this week off with a quality workout to make up for the cancelled race on Saturday. District Championship Week (10/22-28)

District Championship week is upon us! After starting summer practices 18 weeks ago, we approach the race that we have been focusing on all season. We have put in a lot of hard work this season and this is where all of that hard work pays off. This week we will continue to focus on tapering, staying healthy and sharpening up for race day. Both the girls and the boys teams have an opportunity to qualify for the State meet. So let’s stay focused this week and do all of the little things to allow us to perform at our best on Saturday.

Just like the Oxford Classic, we want as many Cougar XC  fans out on the course on Saturday. This is a home course for us and having fans out on the course gives us that extra boost! The race for that #3 qualifying spot is going to be tight and having home course support could be the difference! So work on your family and friends and get them out to the District meet on Saturday! 🙂

Week 17- Central Oregon Relays

The Warner Pacific Meet was exactly what we thought it would be. Fast! We set 35 Personal Bests on the day! It was a great way to get some speed in the legs and go up against the best competition in the State. Thank you Parents that were out on the course in Portland cheering on the Cougs! Week 16 (10/8-14)

The Oxford Classic showed us a lot of good things as a team. We had 16 PRs on a course that was significantly long. We had the best fans out on the course cheering on our runners (The Cougar included). And both Varsity squads showed that they can contend for a qualifying spot for the State meet. It was a great day, and truly an all around team effort. Thank you to all of those that came out and supported the team at Oxford. You all made it a very special day out on the course. With Only 3 weeks left in the regular season. It is crucial that everyone does their best to make it to practices. We have to stay committed if we want to achieve our goals. So let’s stay focused and continue to support each other as a team. You have all put in tremendous work this season. Now it’s time to reap the benefits and enjoy the ride! We have one more fast and competitive race this Saturday at Warner Pacific. Then it’s a fun week with Central Oregon Relays before we head into the District Championship week. Week 15 (10/1-7)

We had 21 PRs this weekend between Nike XC and the Madras invite! The team is still trying to get over sickness that is going around, but everyone still competed hard and looked great. Check out our top performance from the weekend below!

We have 1 month left in the regular season, which means we have to focus on staying healthy and make sure we are taking care of ourselves. We are in a good place as a team right now. So let’s keep doing the little things that keep us healthy and strong (Sleep,Healthy Diet, Hydrate, Foam rolling, Etc). This is the final push to sharpen up and get faster before the district meet. Bigfoot 10k Sunday 10/7

This Sunday 10/7, we will be helping out at the Bigfoot 10k run. This is an event that supports all of the XC programs in the Bend-Lapine school district. We will be in charge of the area leading up to the finish area and will be meeting at River Bend Park at 9am to get instructions. The race directors would like the athletes that aren’t needed on the course to participate in the race if you want! It would just be an easy run for you. They are offering a special $10 race fee originally $40 for Students. Use the code XCATHLETE for online entry. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate. Numbers are down from last year, so they could use all the sign-ups they can get!

Oxford Classic

The Oxford Classic is this Friday at Drake Park. This is a great opportunity for us to get as many of our parents and supporters out on the course. This is basically our only “home meet” besides the District meet. So let’s get a lot of Cougar XC fans out there and cheer loud!

Students will be excused from class at 11am. We will meet at the XC tree and carpool to Drake park. If parents can help drive that would be great! Below is the race schedule for Friday.

Week 14 (9/24-30)

What a great weekend in Seaside! We had an awesome showing at a very big meet. We placed well as a team and had 6 top 10 individual finishes in our division. There were 80 teams in attendance and each race had over 300 runners! Check out the results from Saturday below. Thank you to all of the parents who helped with carpooling to and from Seaside. Without your help we would not have been able to make this trip work with one bus! You guys rock!

This week we have two different meets on the schedule. We have Nike Portland XC for the varsity squads and the Madras Invite for the JV Squads. Both meets will be fast and competitive and everyone should get back in time for Homecoming! We will also be helping out at the Sky View Middle School meet at Pine Nursery this Thursday for practice. We will run over to the park and help with the meet until it is over. We may be ending practice a little later than usual. Probably around 5:30pm. This is another great opportunity for our team to connect with the middle school runners. Be sure to where your Mountain View XC gear!

Week #12 (9/10-14)

Wow, what a great day at the Saxon Invite for the Cougars! Our first big invitational of the season and we saw some great racing and results across the board. Both the Girls and Boys teams competed hard and finished 7th out of 25 teams attending! Kelsey Swenson was our top finisher, placing 3rd (18:23) in another very competitive women’s race! The varsity boys team improved their time spread of the 1-5 runners from 37 seconds to 22 seconds! Overall it was a very promising performance by everyone looking ahead to what we can accomplish this season. Check out the link below for results on athletic.net!

Now we head into our off week from racing. This will give us a chance to get in a big week of training while focusing on taking care of those aches and pains we tend to get at this point in the season. It is also a great mental break and a good opportunity to rest from 3 weekends in a row for racing. Week #11

Our second meet of the season brought some great competition and awesome performances! It was also awesome to see so many Mountain View XC parents and fans out on the course on Saturday. Thank you for making the trip to Eugene and for your support of the team!

This course flat and fast, however it was also a little longer than 5k. So we can’t get too hung up on times. Everyone gave a great race effort and that is awesome to see this early in the season. This meet also gave us a better look at what our Varsity and JV squads might look like for the season, and we like what we see!! Here are some highlights and stats from the meet.

Meet Highlights

-Kelsey Swenson placed 5th (18:54) in a very competitive Girls Varsity race!

-Hannah Tranby placed 2nd (21:49) in the Girls JV race. Her first High School XC race!

-Cole Shockey won the Boys JV race (17:52). Also his first High School XC race!

-Olivia Carpenter placed 4th in the 3k (13:38). First High School race!

-The JV Boys brought home some hardware, placing 2nd as a team to Summit.

-The Varsity Boys had a spread of 37 seconds for our 1-5 runners.

We will be wearing our white team shirts for the picture. Try and wear black or dark shorts to try and match the best we can. Order forms will be available if you haven’t picked one up yet.

Practice Schedule Week 11: 

Monday 9/3- No Practice. Easy recovery run on your own.

Tuesday 9/4- 3:15 pm @Mtn View- Team Pictures, Cutdown workout @ Pine Nursery. Practice will end a little later due to pictures. 5:30-5:45pm.

Wednesday 9/5- 3:15 pm @Mtn View- Recovery run 4-6 miles. Strides. Water balloon fight and Ice Cream with the Trinity XC team.

Thursday 9/6- 3:15pm @Mtn View- Fly 150s @race pace. Followed by Team Core/ Stretching.

Friday 9/7- 3:15pm @Mtn View- Recovery run 3-4 miles. Strides. Foam Rolling/ Stretching.

Saturday 9/8- Race Day! Saxon Invite. Depart from Mtn View @6am. Return around 5pm.
